Cervical Screening Awareness Month
Free beauty travel packs up for grabs, for Cervical Screening Awareness Month
September is Cervical Screening Awareness Month. To encourage women to find out more about cervical screening, the Ministry of Health’s National Screening Unit (NSU) has teamed up with Stayfree and Johnson & Johnson to offer the opportunity to win one of 1000 beauty travel packs. People can enter by going to the website www.cervicalscreening.govt.nz and answering a simple question.
Cell changes to the cervix can lead to cervical cancer. These cell changes are caused by the human papillomavirus (HPV) virus, which most people come into contact with at some stage in their life. But the changes happen very slowly, so by having regular smears, there is a very high likelihood that abnormal cells will be found and treated long before they ever become cancer. This is what makes cervical cancer one of the most preventable of all cancers.
Cervical Screening Awareness Month is a prompt for women to have a smear if it is due or overdue. Many women will get a reminder from their GP or smear taker when they are due for a smear. If you are due, get it done as soon as possible − and celebrate that sense of achievement afterwards!
Women who are not sure when their smear is due, or who want to find out more about cervical screening, can ring the freephone number – 0800 729 729 or go to the website www.cervicalscreening.govt.nz.
Investing a small amount of time in having regular cervical smears could save your life – reducing your risk of developing cervical cancer by about 90 percent. Cervical smear tests every three years are recommended from the age of 20 to 70 for women who have ever been sexually active.
There are lots of things in life that you can’t control, but by having regular cervical smear tests you can greatly reduce your likelihood of developing cervical cancer. You’re worth it!

Whirlwind Album Release.
Ordinary Bloke. Extraordinary Album
On Saturday, June 11th, local singer-songwriter Ryan Edwards will reveal his long-awaited album Whirlwind at a high-profile concert at Lindale Auditorium.
The album is part of the exciting Whirlwind project which is raising the profile of men’s mental health in New Zealand, and changing peoples’ lives in the process. In partnership with local counselor Martin Sloman, Edwards has created the Whirlwind project which is encouraging ordinary men to tell their extraordinary stories about their struggles with mental health.
The Whirlwind project consists of original music by Ryan Edwards featuring Mike Chunn of Split Enz and local talent Ash Graham, plus a series of postcards featuring quotes from the likes of international comedian Stephen Fry, All Black legend John Kirwan and those of every-day kiwi men.
“Music has the power to resonate, so when I saw the chance to make the album I’d always dreamed of, and the potential of a collaboration between art and outreach, Whirlwind came to life.” says Ryan Edwards.
Whirlwind was recorded at the popular Drift Café in Waikanae Beach throughout October, featuring local musicians and, such was the appeal of an album helping kiwi men, that business and individuals alike made significant contributions to make the album possible.
The album and the hard-hitting postcards will be available for gold coin donation from selected Marbecks Stores and at cafés in Kapiti from June 10th, with all proceeds going towards helping men tell their stories, a process Martin Sloman says is of the utmost importance.
“Typically men aren’t very good at coming forward and admitting that they have a problem, so the more we get them talking to each other, the more they will realise that it’s perfectly ok not to be ok.”
The project launch aptly coincides with Men's Health Week 13 - 19 June.
Tickets for the launch concert can be booked at www.lindale.co.nz/ticketing for $15, which includes a copy of Whirlwind and a set of postcards. Door sales will also be available from 7pm on the night.
